Now that we are getting ready for the March meeting, I wanted to know if someone would like to share their experiences with the group? I think that is important that we all share our experiences and successes. The presenter for the April meeting will be Lee Gradenswartz. She is a well know consultant in cultural competency and initiating CLAS programs. Her expertise in this area, I hope, will be very beneficial. Our May presenter will be Karen Heiser. She will be discussing her organizations program and how she received buy in from the organization. It is my plan to organize our meetings to present the resources that will be the most beneficial to the group. However, your input is very important to obtaining this goal. Contributions to the listserv have been minimal. This is a valuable tool that is not being utilized to its full capacity. Please take advantage of this tool. Below are some suggestions that may help initiated some discussions: * Are you working on a project that you are having problems with? What are the roadblocks to your success? * Do you have a work plan that is not receiving positive responses from leadership? Has anyone else in the group had this problem before? * I do not know where to even begin. Can anyone give me any suggestions on how to build the foundation that would give a solid platform to build on? * How are you measuring outcomes? Is your quality or compliance department involved in this process? If so, what is their role? I think these are basic questions that I had in the implementation of our program. During that period I reached out to numerous resources to find the answers I needed. Think about these questions and let's discuss them. Choose one that we can focus on at this week's meeting. They are intended to give you a platform to discuss something you?re proud of that others can learn from, or something you need help with that the group can offer advice on. Below are some suggestions that may help initiated some discussions: ? Are you working on a project that you are having problems with? What are the roadblocks to your success? ? Do you have a work plan that is not receiving positive responses from leadership? Has anyone else in the group had this problem before? ? I do not know where to even begin. Can anyone give me any suggestions on how to build the foundation that would give a solid platform to build on? ? How are you measuring outcomes? Is your quality or compliance department involved in this process? If so, what is their role? I think these are basic questions that I had in the implementation of our program. During that period I reached out to numerous resources to find the answers I needed. Think about these questions and let's discuss them. Choose one that we can focus on at this week's meeting. This is ideally how it should work, so we have a continuity of interaction from the listserv to the actual webinar meeting. We can always discuss different approaches. The discussion launch is usually 10-15 minute Powerpoint presentation (3-5 slides). The presentation is intended to be a launch for discussion of the issues designated for that meeting, as well as an opportunity to inject real-life experiences that invite sharing of similar experiences and/or collaborative problem solving. Specifically addressing the topic for that meeting, the presentation can be: an overview of the successes or challenges your institution has faced related to the topic a description and analysis of a case, incident, success or challenge from your professional experience a summary and analysis of a key resource or article that serves as a launch to discussing the topic In principle, everyone is required to prepare one of these presentations. In practice, there are more members than actual meetings. So we will start by scheduling people who are really keen to do a presentation, and fill in any gaps from there. Preparation process: A week before each monthly meeting, the person doing the launch presentation will send out any background documents and a few questions to get people talking about the issue on the listserv. If the list is quiet after this material is sent out, the presenter and/or moderator should make a contribution or two to get the discussion rolling. 3 business days before the meeting, the presenter should send their slides to Anne Turner, who will incorporate them into the online meeting platform. S/he should also have a printed copy of their slides on hand while they are making the presentation. During the meeting, the moderator will introduce the presenter and, after the presentation, moderate the discussion. We aim to have at least 30 minutes for discussion in each meeting, but this may vary. After the meeting, the group can continue the conversation started at the meeting on the listserv, and the presenter and moderator can also pose follow-up observations and further discussion questions. /////|||||\\\\\/////|||||\\\\\/////|||||\\\\\/////|||||\\\\\ Julia Puebla Fortier, Director Resources for Cross Cultural Health Care www.DiversityRx.org rcchc at aol.com and CoProducer National Conference Series on Quality Health Care for Culturally Diverse Populations www.diversityRxconference.org \\\\\|||||/////\\\\\|||||/////\\\\\|||||/////\\\\\|||||///// -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... Specifically addressing the topic for that meeting, the presentation can be: * an overview of the successes or challenges your institution has faced related to the topic * a description and analysis of a case, incident, success or challenge from your professional experience * a summary and analysis of a key resource or article that serves as a launch to discussing the topic In principle, everyone is required to prepare one of these presentations. /////|||||\\\\\/////|||||\\\\\/////|||||\\\\\/////|||||\\\\\ Julia Puebla Fortier, Director Resources for Cross Cultural Health Care www.DiversityRx.org rcchc at aol.com and CoProducer National Conference Series on Quality Health Care for Culturally Diverse Populations www.diversityRxconference.org \\\\\|||||/////\\\\\|||||/////\\\\\|||||/////\\\\\|||||///// ----------------------------------------- This message and its attachments may contain confidential and/or legally-sensitive information that is intended for the sole use of the addressee(s). After the meeting, the group can continue the conversation started at the meeting on the listserv, and the presenter and moderator can also pose follow-up observations and further discussion questions. Also, please email me dates that you will be available to discuss your program. Let's us our time together for to our advantage. SIETAR-USA Conference Theme and Program http://www.sietarusaconference.com/ The SIETAR-USA 2010 conference is being held in Spokane, WA, April 14-17, 2010. The theme of the 2010 conference is Living and Working in an Intercultural World. Within the mission of SIETAR is an orientation and a need to reach out and connect with people everywhere who are living and working in the diverse world we are learning to comprehend. That diversity includes: * people engaged in any profession, field of study, workplace, or activity that involves individuals or teams working across cultural boundaries; * people whose cultural differences are defined by birthplace, ancestry, religion, skin color, gender, age, and/or sexual orientation. Intercultural communication requires a context in which to be practiced. That context is no longer remote or unique, but is the world in which we live every day at every level of society. Living in this world is a daily intercultural experience and we contend that we can shape the quality of this experience. This is an opportunity to explore how the reality of living interculturally can be approached dynamically and creatively, especially in a time of reduced resources. We seek to inspire the exploration of new solutions, new ways of thinking and new ways of taking action in a world where the many facets of diversity are encountered each day, and where any hope for living peacefully lies in living constructively with difference. What has been learned through intercultural research, through our experience with training and education, and by applying the theories and concepts that support intercultural work? What do we know about living and working in diverse societies, across generations as well as other differences, in places of violence and hatred, under conditions of deprivation and exploitation, when dealing with political strife? What can we learn from the stories we share? There is much to learn, and there is much to create as we face the reality of living and working in an intercultural world, and as we learn to be part of or engage with the global generation. We are excited to welcome Lee Gardenswartz and Anita Rowe as presenters for this upcoming meeting. They have developed a wonderful session for this meeting ~ details are below. ~~~~~~~~~~~ Emotional Intelligence & Diversity: An Approach for Developing Culturally Responsive Care Effectiveness in health care depends on more than just experience and knowledge. Emotional Intelligence is a critical competence for health care professionals desiring to provide culturally responsive care to a diverse array of patients. While emotions are the source of energy behind engagement, productivity and dedication, they can also be the source of discord, misunderstanding and impaired interactions. This is especially so in today's diverse health care environments where differing values may be at odds, where norms often vary and where cultural differences may present obstacles to understanding. This session will share a model and examples of activities for building the Emotional Intelligence necessary for increasing the cultural competence of staff in order to provide culturally responsive care. Presenters: Lee Gardenswartz, Ph.D. and Anita Rowe, Ph.D., began helping organizations with diversity in 1977 when they worked with Los Angeles Unified School District to deal with its diversity challenges at the time of mandatory integration. Since that time they have specialized in the "human side of management" for a variety of regional and national clients, helping them manage change, handle stress, build productive and cohesive work teams and create inter-cultural understanding and harmony in the workplace. In addition to direct client relationships, Lee and Anita have also helped organizations through their writing on diversity. They have co-authored a numerous books including Managing Diversity: A Complete Desk Reference and Planning Guide (1993, 1998), Managing Diversity Survival Guide (1994), The Diversity Tool Kit (1994, 2009), Diverse Teams at Work (1995, 2003), Managing Diversity in Health Care (1998), Managing Diversity in Health Care Manual (1999) and The Global Diversity Desk Reference (2003.) Their most recent book is Emotional Intelligence for Managing Results in a Diverse World (2008.)
